Stage 1

Please note - this is a trial of the Moderate route being planned by Annan the History Town Group which will use information hubs being installed soon and we are looking for feedback from this trial.

The trail loops so it can be started at any of the information points.

This Moderate route is 1.5 mile (3300 steps) taking 33 minutes if you don’t stop to take in the history and the views.

Please note some pavements are uneven, narrow or non-existent so please take care especially when crossing busy roads.

Once established, there will be much more historic information, quizzes and questions on the proposed web link and the boards themselves.

Everholm – Battery Street

The information board here will replace the damaged one on the sandstone plinth. It will tell of the Motte & Bailey castle and the remains which are still here today. The wooded mound is the remnants of the seat of the DeBrus family who had this fortification built. It is a rarity because many other sites do not have a surviving Bailey.

There will be further information near the entrance to the car park and at the top of the Bailey. On this moderate walk, we will stay on this low level. Parts of the castle were washed away during a flood thought to be the result of a curse put on the family and the whole town of Annan. The DeBrus family moved their base to Lochmaben.

Directions: walk through the car park area to the exit and the next point just a few yards ahead as you start the climb.
