Stage 4

Please note - this is a trial of the Moderate route being planned by Annan the History Town Group which will use information hubs being installed soon and we are looking for feedback from this trial.

The trail loops so it can be started at any of the information points.

This Moderate route is 1.5 mile (3300 steps) taking 33 minutes if you don’t stop to take in the history and the views.

Please note some pavements are uneven, narrow or non-existent so please take care especially when crossing busy roads.

Once established, there will be much more historic information, quizzes and questions on the proposed web link and the boards themselves.

Downies Wynd - Everholm

Here the information board will give details of Annan the History Town, the High Street and the Riding of the Marches traditions.

This location gives a good view of the historic sandstone buildings, a lot of them are listed buildings.

Look out for guardstones which kept carriage wheels away from the walls as they turned corners.

Downies Wynd used to be the only main route to the Solway before Bank Street was built.

Directions: Cross the High Street and head towards the Town Hall and turn right down Battery Street to the far end of the Everholm car park.

There are a couple of pathways which take you to the top of Motte & Bailey site if you have the energy and want to take in the sights!
